D-Link also has a bridge that covers about this distance. Googling long range WiFi, I see that WiFi bridges that can cover up to 20KM (!) are available on the market. The limitation that makes most consumer gear kind of short-reaching evidently wasn't with the protocol. I can't remember the number but I remember it surprised me. Our CTO mentioned some experiments they had run to determine the maximum transmission distance of WiFi networks. MIMO power save mode, also known as spatial multiplexing power save (SMPS) mode, allows the client to save power by keeping one antenna in a receive idle state. Years ago, I worked with a few interesting guys who had spent time running tech in a military environment. Certain properties may not appear depending on the type of wireless adapter, driver version, or operating system installed. This is the one aspect of WiFi I've always been curious about: are there products beyond the typical consumer level hardware on the market that needs repeaters and APs to reach any kind of reasonable distance? The one detail that seems to be buried deep down most spec sheets is maximum transmission power (the WiFi standard used and maximum speed seem to be shown much more prominently).
